Satellite Countries
Satellite Countries
Satellite countries were smaller states that were politically or economically dependent on a more powerful state.
In the Cold War context, this usually refers to Eastern European countries controlled by the Soviet Union, such as:
- Poland
- Hungary
- Romania
- Bulgaria
- East Germany
These states were expected to follow Soviet political and economic models.
Warning
They were not fully independent; their governments were heavily influenced or controlled by the USSR.
They were closely tied to Soviet policies such as COMECON and opposition to Marshall Plan aid.
