Suez Crisis
The Suez Crisis took place in 1956 after Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal.
In response:
- Israel invaded Egypt
- Britain and France intervened
- the United States and the Soviet Union opposed the invasion
- the United Nations helped broker a settlement
Important
The crisis showed that old European empires were weakening, while superpowers and the UN had greater influence.
It also highlighted Egypt’s attempt to stay independent in the Cold War world.
