Third World
The Third World referred to countries that were not closely aligned with either the First World or the Second World during the Cold War.
Many of these countries:
- had colonial pasts
- were in Asia, Africa, Oceania, or Latin America
- tried to avoid strong military or ideological dependence on either superpower

In Cold War history, the term was political, not simply a synonym for “poor countries.”
