Benazir Bhutto became prime minister of Pakistan in 1988.
She was:
- the first elected female leader of a majority Muslim country
- the daughter of a former prime minister
- a major symbol of women’s political leadership in South Asia
Note
Bhutto tried to improve Pakistan’s economy and reduce poverty, but corruption accusations remained a constant problem.
She later returned from exile and was assassinated in 2007.
