Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union during and after World War II.
In the early Cold War, he:
- tightened Soviet control over Eastern Europe
- supported the spread of communist influence
- opposed Western efforts such as the Marshall Plan
Important
Stalin was one of the main architects of the early Cold War order in Eastern Europe.
His policies helped create the Soviet bloc behind the Iron Curtain.
