Julius Nyerere
Julius Nyerere was the first president of Tanzania and a major African socialist thinker.
He promoted ujamaa (“familyhood”), an egalitarian system based on:
- cooperative agriculture
- literacy campaigns
- free education
- reduced dependence on foreign aid
Important
Nyerere tried to build an African form of socialism rather than simply copying foreign models.
Although personally respected, he could not overcome Tanzania’s deep economic difficulties.
