Kashmir is a mountainous border region disputed mainly by India and Pakistan, with part also controlled by China.
At partition in 1947:
- most of Kashmir’s population was Muslim
- its ruler was Hindu
- both India and Pakistan claimed the region
Warning
Kashmir became one of the most dangerous and enduring conflicts in South Asia.
The issue became even more serious once India and Pakistan developed nuclear weapons.
