The Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty was signed in 1963 by the Soviet Union, the United States, and many other countries.
It banned nuclear weapons testing:
- above ground
- underwater
- in space
Underground testing remained legal.
Important
The treaty aimed to reduce radiation exposure and lower global fear of nuclear testing.
