Angola
Angola became independent from Portugal in 1975 after a long anti-colonial struggle.
After independence, civil war broke out among rival groups, each supported by outside powers:
- USSR and Cuba backed one group
- South Africa backed another
- the United States backed another
Note
Angola became a Cold War battlefield in Africa.
It is a classic example of a proxy war.
