Biafran Civil War
Biafran Civil War
The Biafran Civil War began in 1967 in Nigeria when the Igbo-dominated southeast tried to break away and form the independent state of Biafra.
The conflict was driven by:
- ethnic tension
- religious division
- competition over oil-rich land
- violence from the northern-dominated government
Warning
The secession failed, and Biafra ceased to exist in 1970.
The war showed the serious challenges faced by newly independent African states.
