Hamas is a Palestinian political and militant faction that controlled Gaza.

Its rise contributed to a split in Palestinian leadership between Hamas in Gaza and Fatah in the West Bank.

This division made negotiations with Israel more difficult and contributed to continuing violence.

Israeli border controls on Gaza were justified as security measures but also caused serious hardship for Palestinians.
