Indira Gandhi became India’s leader in 1966 after the death of her father, Jawaharlal Nehru.
She:
- strengthened India politically and economically
- led India during conflict with Pakistan
- declared a national emergency in 1975
- jailed opposition leaders
- returned to power in 1980
Important
Indira Gandhi was one of the most powerful and controversial leaders in modern Indian history.
She was assassinated in 1984.
