Mao Zedong was the leader of the Chinese Communists and the founding leader of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
He gained support by:
- redistributing land to peasants
- promoting nationalism
- presenting the Communists as less corrupt than the Nationalists
Mao later launched the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.
