Mohammad Mosaddegh

Mohammad Mosaddegh was the democratically chosen prime minister of Iran.

He is best known for trying to nationalize Iran’s oil industry, which challenged British and Western interests.

In 1953, the United States and Great Britain helped overthrow him and restore Muhammad Reza Pahlavi.

Important

Mosaddegh became a symbol of anti-imperialism and Iranian nationalism.

His overthrow deeply shaped later anger toward Western influence in Iran.
