The Algerian Civil War lasted from 1991 to 2002.
It began after the first round of an election was canceled when the Islamic Salvation Front appeared likely to win.

- violence against one-party rule
- continuing FLN control
- insurgency, bombings, and state repression
Warning
The war reflected tensions between authoritarian secular rule and Islamist opposition.
It grew out of long-term political problems left by the post-independence system and the earlier One-Party State structure.
