Charles de Gaulle was president of France during a critical stage of the Algerian independence struggle.
He:
- gained expanded presidential power in 1958
- proposed the steps leading to Algerian independence
- appealed directly to the public through a referendum
Note
De Gaulle helped move France toward ending the Algerian War For Independence, even though the issue deeply divided France.
