Decolonization
Decolonization
Decolonization was the process by which colonies gained independence from imperial powers.
It accelerated after World War II because:
- European empires were weakened
- nationalist movements grew stronger
- anti-colonial ideas spread widely
- the Cold War reshaped global politics
Between 1945 and 2000, the number of independent states in the world more than doubled.
